Where in the world?

Certain climates provide perfect conditions for deciduous woodlands.

Woodland ecosystems can be found where summer temperatures range from 15 to 20°C and cool winters don’t tend to drop below freezing. Rainfall is only moderate, and can range between 1000 and 1500mm which falls throughout the year.

The areas highlighted in green on the map are areas which share a climate favourable to woodland species, similar to the description just given. This has been the case since the last ice age ended, when climates became warmer. Native broadleaved woodland would have once covered much of the UK’s landscape.

Sadly, the UK today is one of the least wooded places in Europe. 12% of the UK is wooded compared with an average of 44% of other European countries.
